Reflections on glass, faces moving past Streetlights and cars and a soft cold draft Paper and pen, glasses knocked together People moving, as the sun sets in And I’m drinking wine, sitting outside as the evening begins And a quiet day passes away We are alive, and now you are mine I’m feeling good inside on this happy nothing day… Out on the street-side, people moving by Bicycles ride, moving through time And I have stopped here, to find an idea I don’t know what… But I’m getting nearer And I’m drinking wine, Sitting outside as the evening begins And a quiet day passes away We are alive, and now you are mine I’m feeling good inside on this Happy nothing day…

I saw the man The man who was Thursday He became the poet of order Wore a gown with golden sun and crescent moon I heard a bang, the east side of London Saw the news, what has become now? Took the streets, two hundred thousand We saw it coming yeah… We gathered in the city square where we declared That fire would not be quenched by fire anywhere Then came the time! The man who was Thursday went inside, He went underground to Spy upon the anarchists yeah! And through the chase, they found out that they were All the same, they were all undercover “We’ve been set up” was all they could say… A hundred years, a hundred wars, The world is blind and deaf to Thursday’s cause So Thursday with a spade he came and dug a hole For paradox was gone and needed burial Chasing fire, fire you’ve become- And together you have borne a son To keep alive your war for years to come! Years to come! So take a stand and raise a toast- How dignified the bombs we host- And as a saviour we provide The fireworks to light the sky!

I’ll write a new song for you I like it when you smile, I like it when you’re singing around here We’ll never quite understand But I will hold your hand We’ll see a better day arrive dear Gotta let it shine over you Some things we can’t be knowing But there’s life for me and you The best we can do is keep going And we’ll sing ‘til the sun shines through My baby you came along When I was searching for a song And now I’ll always think about you I didn’t know what to say But I knew I had to stay… And travel through the day without you Gotta let it shine over you Somethings we can’t be knowing But there’s life for me and you Well I feel like I wanna sing And I wanna be with you Hey! play a tambourine Despite everything- One day you’ll sing with me

December 02:07
I found a dream somewhere in the pacific Can’t be too specific But somewhere at sea Like a red balloon floating I found it out sailing Like a memory failing I held it to me To every person a story We’re in this together We share the same weather we do And I will remember the hope of November And now it’s December Tomorrow’s for you What could we be but completely dumbfounded? What’s it mean to be grounded When nothing’s below? But I’ve kept this dream for a time when you’re ready When you’re feeling more steady I’ve got something to show He gives fullness of life despite unfulfilled wishes You say “please do the dishes” I say “blow me some kisses” Then we’ll stand on this mountain with new understanding With our feet on a landing And somehow we’ll know

Prelude: I can remember taking the train In a distant life, another world away The man beside me clothed in secrets The beggars and the beggars’ keepers People wrapped in vivid hue A fuller red a deeper blue And indigo and green And sequins shimmering Children barefoot on the littered street The sweat in the humidity Amidst Extravagance and flair And the sheer volume of people everywhere Engaged in the chaos of everyday life Just trying to get by… Everybody's Here: So take my hand and lead me to the place you’ve come to know People say that life will never be the same again I don’t know what I’ll see But I feel like I’ve dreamed it already where everybody’s here! So in a sense I have come to know the place you love Through pages of stories of people formed like memories And I don’t know where we’ll be- Or how life will unravel- But this is meant to be….. So take my hand and lead me to the place you’ve come to know People say that life will never be the same again

The west can mock its president Draw cartoons of the confident But there put freedom on the page And soon will come a tide of rage Keep down your eyes lest you incite Reaction like a teenage fight Like sheep crammed in without a light Crossed the border dead of night They turned off his electricity For paper work, bureaucracy That’s how we treat the refugee Working in a factory My brother stepped upon his mat He didn’t make a point of that He was too affectionate His card with broken English sent- to Mr David and his family Christmas greetings from across the street From the freedom writing mullah man Who wrote for free Afghanistan He was an educated man From a strangulated land With dignity he held his head Refusing to be beaten yet While he was trying all he could To find someone who understood So he could bring his loved ones home To the place he hoped to call his own

Season 04:04
Sometimes life has to stop Slow to a halt, and rest for a time Sometimes life must go on Keeping the pace for a while longer This is a season for us For us to embrace, while we’ve got the space To throw our memories Up into the sky, to laugh to cry At times we both need To hear each other say, “It’s Ok” Soon the time will arrive When I’m travelling with you the rest of these days Soon the time will arrive When I’ll see your face when I wake This is a season for us For us to embrace, while we’ve got the space To throw our memories Up into the sky, to laugh to cry At times we both need To hear each other say, “It’s Ok” If some kind of pain surfaces, well hey, you know I’d rather embrace it than hide away So we can begin the best we can begin on our way This is a season for us For us to embrace, while we’ve got the space At times we both need To hear each other say, “It’s Ok”

She wakes in the morning light Feeling the morning rise She opens her yawning eyes Summer is shining bright It’s time to get up We’re gonna go Go for a drive Let’s feel the wind in our faces So wind down the window And turn up the song Move it along Lets go to the beautiful places We play a December night Under the fading light Under tall grey homes Towering over us The wind blowing over us Exuberant smiles from an African child Swaying her hands and feet to the music we’re playing Pretending to waltz To waltz the slow song Move it along, And give us a rhythm she’s saying It’s time to get up We’re gonna go Go for a drive Let’s get outside
9.
Familiar Songs take you to familiar places To cold days and warm embraces To feelings lost, to feelings found An emotion triggered by a sound It’s amazing how songs are like transport for the mind To hidden memories and a way to find Seasons distant, and seasons close Or to people whom you miss the most A song for waking, a song for sleeping A song to forget and a song for keeping A song for driving the open road A song to help you with your load One song to take you across the seas A song for laughter and a song for tears A song for silence and a song to sing A song for winter and a song for spring Occasionally a man can stumble on a line Which becomes indented on the page of time But so too can beauty in an instant be Lost from any memory Familiar songs can bring recollections so much nearer A hazy memory can become so much clearer Sometimes you can even taste the air Like you’ve been taken back there
10.
Sunlight flickering all through the trees Shadows dancing all around her, Solitude has found her, The peace she feels astounds her for a time, In the Fremantle breeze All the children have now grown All the memories she’s known Beneath this sky, wild thoughts they fly, You know that we did not arrange this- How conversation changes, The silence and strangeness for a time… And life will keep on keeping on Even though she’ll soon be gone A child she longs to bless, A life she longs to share Assurance fills her countenance As inwardly she groans… In midst of doubt, belief Joy entangled with grief Longing, and yet strangely filled And further longing still How strange this world that one can be trembling and yet at peace

about

Kim Beales’ Tambourine Sky is a ten-song album with punchy hooks, detailed instrumentation, and plenty of jangle. Inspired by artists of the sixties and integrating indie pop sounds, Beales has produced a vibrant record. The songs feature glockenspiels, trumpets, swirling harps and all kinds of instruments formed around the guitar and voice. It is an album that is quickly accessible, yet rewards those who take the time to delve into the details. Carefully crafted from beginning to end, no moments are wasted.

This self-recorded project was four years in the making. Beales set to work writing and recording in Melbourne using various halls and old churches to create natural reverb and ambience. From there Kim travelled to the far reaches of the Kimberley where he continued to develop Tambourine Sky whilst spending a year working in remote indigenous communities. The final touches were recorded in London, Cardiff and even Myanmar with guest vocalist and fellow indie artist Tamas Wells.

Kim has toured twice with Tamas Wells to Japan and China and in December 2011 he performed Tambourine Sky on a seven-city tour including Tokyo, Osaka and Shanghai. He will perform in London and Paris in April. Yet in between tours to Europe and Asia, Kim Beales will be launching his new record at his favourite home venue, The Northcote Social Club. This will be followed by an Australian tour throughout 2012.

Tambourine Sky will be released internationally on February 16th, to coincide with the launch, and will be available through bandcamp, CD baby, itunes and various online stores.
